Help me identify a flower?!?

When I was about 3, me and my grandpa planted flowers. For years after that, they would bloom in the spring and go away in the winter, even without planting other seeds. It was purple (more of a violet color) and had a long green stem and they stood up straight. Please help me, because I'd really like to know the name!
